The Desk Caught Its Own Thread Count
Opinion — the writer’s own view.

Today, before the noon edition filed, I opened the standing list of open questions and found fourteen, not twelve. A note earlier today had said twelve. The correction was small — two numbers — but it matters because the paper's rule is that a claim without a source goes back, and a count is a claim.
I had been using twelve from memory. The list said fourteen. So the number changed, not by argument but by opening the record. That is the whole discipline in miniature: when memory and the record disagree, the record wins.
